Community Environment: Population 50,000. After the battle of San Jacinto, the first military capital of the new republic was established here in Victoria. Today, the area is known for its cattle raising. The city is located 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Local industries include chemicals, sand and gravel mining, and oil and gas production. Part-time employment is limited. The climate is mild. Victoria is reached by bus and airline connections. The community has several churches. Local recreation includes salt water fishing, boating, swimming and water skiing in the Gulf of Mexico, a municipal park and golf courses.
