Pinza, Ezio (b Rome, 1892; d Stamford, Conn., 1957). It. bass. Début Soncino, 1914 (Oroveso in Norma). After army service, made Rome début 1920 as King Mark in Tristan. Sang at La Scala 1921–4; NY Met 1926–48; CG 1930–9; Salzburg Fest. début 1934. Repertory of nearly 100 roles. A great Don Giovanni. His noble voice and fine looks were matched by dramatic ability. After his operatic career, appeared in musicals and films, notably in South Pacific on Broadway (1949).
