Berteau, Martin
Berteau, Martin, famous French cellist; b. c. 1700; d. Angers, Jan. 23, 1771. He studied the bass viol with Kozecz in Germany, then took up the cello, achieving mastery of its technique. He is regarded as the protagonist of the French school of cello playing. He also composed a number of effective pieces for cello.
