Cudworth, Charles (b Cambridge, 1908; d Cambridge, 1977). Eng. musicologist, teacher, and critic. Protégé of E. J. Dent. Ass. in mus. section of Univ. Library, Cambridge, 1943–6; librarian, Pendlebury Library at Cambridge Univ. Mus. Sch. 1946–57, curator 1957–73. Authority on baroque and pre-classical mus. First to establish that the ‘Trumpet Voluntary’ was by Jeremiah Clarke, not Purcell. Wrote libs. for Patrick Hadley and novels and plays.
