Melton, James
Melton, James, American tenor; b. Moultrie, Ga., Jan. 2, 1904; d. N.Y., April 21, 1961. He studied with Gaetano de Luca in Nashville and Enrico Rosati in N.Y. and then with Michael Raucheisen in Berlin. He began his career on the radio. He made his concert debut in N.Y. on April 22, 1932, and his operatic debut as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in Cincinnati on June 28, 1938. On Dec. 7, 1942, he appeared for the first time with the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte; remained on its roster until 1950. He also toured the U.S. as a concert singer and later appeared in films.
