Veronese, Paolo Caliari
Veronese, Paolo Caliari (1528–88) Italian painter and decorative artist. A prominent member of the Venetian School, he excelled at painting large scenes featuring flamboyant pageants. Veronese also painted religious and mythological themes. He ran into trouble with the Inquisition for his irreverent treatment of The Last Supper (1573), and had to rename it The Feast in the House of Levi. Other celebrated works are his decorative frescos for the Villa Barbaro near Treviso (1561), and his ceiling, Triumph of Venice (1553), for the Doge's Palace.
