Attini (family Formicidae, subfamily Myrmicinae) Tribe of ants in which foliage cut by foraging workers provides a substrate for the growth of a fungus, localized in fungus gardens within the soil nest. Fungal gongylidia (hyphae with swollen tips) are harvested by workers and fed to larvae. There are 200 species, restricted to the New World where most occur in the neotropics.
