tonofilament An aggregation of filaments, approximately 0.7–0.8 nm in diameter, that occurs in large numbers in certain epithelial cells (see EPITHELIUM). Tonofilaments are particularly conspicuous in areas immediately beneath desmosomal plaques, which apparently they help to anchor to the cell cytoplasm.
