Stanley Cohen
1922-
American biochemist who shared the Nobel Prize in 1986 with Rita Levi-Montalcini for their work on epidermal growth factors. Cohen and Montalcini demonstrated that a factor released by certain mouse tumors stimulated the growth of specific tissues in chick embryos. Cohen later discovered a similar factor in extracts of mouse submaxillary glands. The term "epidermal growth factor" was first used in the 1960s to describe the origins and physiology of factors that altered the timing of specific developmental processes.
