Wigstock: The Movie
Wigstock: The Movie ★★½ 1995 (R)
Documentary of the eponymous annual Labor Day event in Manhattan, billed as the Super Bowl of drag. Shils in-tercuts stage numbers with interviews from a variety of the talented, witty festival performers, such as Lypsinka, Mistress Formika, and RuPaul. One of the best numbers is performed by the Dueling Bankheads (as in Tallulah) singing “Born to Be Wild.” Like the event itself, documentary is more a celebration than a probing, psychological look at drag. Won't appeal to everyone, but a lot of fun for those who can appreciate high hair and high fashion. 92m/C VHS, DVD . RuPaul Charles, John (Lypsinka) Epperson, Alexis Arquette; D: Barry Shils; C: Wolfgang Held, Michael Barrow; M: Peter Fish, Robert Reale.
