Antonicelli, Giuseppe
Antonicelli, Giuseppe, Italian conductor; b. Castrovillari, Dec. 29, 1897; d. Trieste, March 10, 1980. He studied in Turin, where he began his career as a répétiteur at the Teatro Regio. After conducting at Milan’s La Scala (1934–37), he served as artistic director of the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste (1937–45). On Nov. 10, 1947, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. conducting Un ballo in maschera, remaining on its roster until 1950; then served once more as artistic director of the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste (1951–68). His wife was Franca Somigli.
