Houghton, Thomas de
Houghton, Thomas de (fl. 1288–1318). English carpenter and engineer. In 1288 he was involved in building works at Westminster Palace, and in 1292 made the carved timber screen and canopy for the tomb of Queen Eleanor (d. 1291) in Westminster Abbey. For the rest of his career he was in the King's service, working at Beaumaris, Edinburgh, Linlithgow, Dover, and Carlisle Castles, as well as the Tower of London. He was with the English army from 1298 to 1318, and was closely involved not only with building-work, but with the supply, transportation, and building of military equipment for the wars against the Scots.
