Nebelong, Niels Sigfried
Nebelong, Niels Sigfried. (1806–71). Danish architect. A pupil of Hetsch and Labrouste, he was an exponent of Schinkelesque Neo-Classicism (e.g. J. C. Jacobsen's villa at Carls-berg, Copenhagen (1852–4) ), but later turned to other aspects of Historicism. He used a Gothic Revival style for the new cloister at Slagelse (1857–8). His social commitment led to his philanthropic housing for the working classes at Christianshavn (1851), influenced by the work of Henry Roberts in England.
His brother, Johan Henrik Nebelong (1817–71) followed his stylistic development. Resident in Norway (1840–53), he designed the Royal Summer Residence, Oscarshall in Bygdøy, Oslo (1847–52—Neo-Gothic with Classical interiors), and many public and private buildings. After he returned to Denmark he collaborated with Bindesbøll in the design of the mental-hospital at Oringe (1853–7).
