oecus. Hall or large room in a Roman house, usually with columns around the interior, like an atrium without compluvium or impluvium. There were four types of oecus:oecus Aegyptus: with columns round the sides (an internal peristyle) supporting a smaller superimposed peristyle between the columns of which light could enter (so a type of clerestorey), and with a walkway over the lower area. Also called an Egyptian hall;oecus Corinthius: with an Order carrying a vaulted roof;oecus Cyzicenus: with a view over gardens and the countryside, usually with folding doors;oecus tetrastylos or -us: with four columns carrying the roof-structure.
