Sustris, Friedrich
Sustris, Friedrich (c.1540–99). Mannerist architect of Dutch descent who worked for the Electoral Court in Munich, Bavaria, and was a contemporary of Candid. He may have designed the chancel and transept of the huge Jesuitenkirche of St Michael, Munich (1583–97— the first large Jesuit church in Northern Europe), and the Grottenhof (Grotto Court) in the Munich Residenz (Court Palace—1580–8), a lively composition with statue-filled niches rather Florentine in style. He carried out alterations at the Residenz in Landshut, Bavaria (1570s), and may have designed the former Jesuit College, Munich (now the Akademie der Wissenschaften (Academy of Sciences) ), built 1585–90.
