India-Pakistan Wars
India-Pakistan Wars Three conflicts between India and Pakistan after they became independent states in 1947. The first (1947–49) arose from a dispute over Jammu and Kashmir. Inconclusive fighting continued until January 1949, when the UN arranged a truce, leaving Kashmir partitioned. This was the chief cause of the second war (1965), when fighting began over another territorial dispute. Both sides invaded the other's territory, but military stalemate resulted in a cease-fire. The third war arose out of the civil war between East and West Pakistan in 1971. India intervened in support of East Pakistan (Bangladesh), and (West) Pakistan suffered a decisive defeat.
