Bhattaraka
Bhattaraka (Skt., ‘learned man’). Head of a group of naked monks in Digambara Jainism. Buildings (maṭha) to accommodate these ascetics began to be built from about the 5th cent. BCE, and the bhattarakas became in effect the presidents of them.
