VÁRNAI, ZSENI
VÁRNAI, ZSENI (1890–1981), Hungarian poet. Zseni Várnai's verse expressed her Socialist and pacifist outlook. The tone of her writing changed, however, under the impact of World War ii, during which she was active in the anti-Nazi underground. Two of her prose works are Mint viharban a falevél ("Like Leaves in the Storm," 1943) and the autobiographical Fényben, viharban ("In Light and Storm," 1958).
