Gymnotidae (knife eel; subclass Actinopterygii, order Cypriniformes) A small family of freshwater fish that have an eel-like body with no fins, except for a very long anal fin and small pectorals, a small head, small eyes, and powerful jaws. They can produce weak electric currents. There are three species, occurring in Central and S. America.
