natural group
natural group A group of organisms of any taxonomic rank that are believed to be descended from a common ancestor (see monophyletic). For example, humans and apes are often regarded as a natural group, descended from fossil ancestors, the dryopithecines (or their near relatives). In an ideal natural classification all taxa should be natural groups. See also cladistics.
