T-system (transverse tubular system) A system of anastomozing tubular invaginations of the plasma membrane that run transversely across striated muscle cells and insinuate themselves between the myofibrils. They can undergo depolarization, and their function is to conduct impulses rapidly from the surface of the muscle cell to its interior.
