1. The later of the two ages of the Palaeocene Epoch, preceded by the Danian, followed by the Ypresian, and dated at 60.5–56.5 Ma ( Harland et al., 1989).
2. The name of the corresponding European stage, which is roughly contemporaneous with the upper Ynezian and Bulitian (N. America), upper Teurian and lower Waipawan (New Zealand), and the upper Wangerripian (Australia). It is named after the Thanet Sands in Kent, England.
