Sir Norman McAlister Gregg
1892-1966
Australian ophthalmologist who discovered the relationship between rubella and babies born with cataracts. In 1941 Gregg examined two babies for cataracts, which is a problem in the eye regarding the lens. Gregg was struck with the fact that the mothers of two babies stated that they had had rubella while pregnant. Following this, he studied the possibility and discovered that there was a direct connection. Gregg was knighted for this discovery in 1953.
