William Tiffin
British inventor who developed an improved form of shorthand in 1750 called phonetic stenography, which featured symbols that stood for sounds as opposed to earlier stenography, which employed symbols that stood for letters. Tiffin's innovation was vital to improving the speed of a stenographer because it allowed the stenographer to transcribe words using fewer symbols.
